Use Photopia to design and analyize UVC disinfection systems directly in
Photopia™ is the perfect optical design software for your UV illumination optical designs. Whether you are designing a UVC air or water purification system or creating a UV light source for UV curing in adhesives or printing, Photopia will help you design the best UV optical system in the shortest amount of time.
Photopia is a plug-in for both SOLIDWORKS® and Rhino®. If you are not using SOLIDWORKS, then Photopia for Rhino is the best option since it includes a full seat of Rhino and allows you to work with IGES or STEP CAD models from any other program, including CATIA®, SOLIDWORKS®, AutoCAD®, Creo Parametricngineer CREO®, SolidEdge®, and Inventor®.
The Photopia Library includes lamp and material data for UV applications, as well as the ability to add custom light sources and material properties. The Parametric Optical Design Tools help you create and optimize reflector and lens shapes for controlling the irradiation pattern of your UV device to optimize the energy onto your target surface.
UVC wavelengths (typically 100-280 nm, with 254 nm mercury being the most common) are very effective at killing biological pathogens, and so UVC disinfection devices are very common in many applications. One application includes disinfecting surfaces in hospital patient rooms, like the computer cart shown to the left. The false color rendering on the cart shows the UVC irradiance on each surface of the cart.
UVC has been applied to disinfect high-touch public surfaces, including public transportation, like the bus shown to the left. Photopia can be used to design reflectors and lenses for these UVGI systems to ensure all surfaces receive the required dose of UVC irradiation. Simulations can include inter-reflected energy with real UVC material properties to understand how inter-reflected energy can contribute to the undersides of surfaces that may be shadowed from direct energy.
UVC air and water purification can also be simulated in Photopia.
The image to the left shows fluence planes within an air duct. See our Solidworks and Rhino tutorials for air duct Fluence.
UVC air purification is also commonly accomplished with Upper Room Irridiation.
